Scottsdale is a small town in Tasmania, situated 22km south-east of Bridport and 63km north-east of Launceston. The town is the service centre for the region and caters for tourists needs with supermarkets, a bakery, takeaway food outlets, internet and ATM access. Medical facilities include a hospital, doctor’s surgeries and pharmacies. For information on local tourist attractions, head to the Scottsdale Visitor Information Centre at the Forest EcoCentre, an award winning building incorporating cutting edge design and technology with a unique use of timber that showcases the forest and history of the region.
Northeast Park, located on Ringarooma Rd offers visitors free parking for a maximum of 14 days, as well as access to a dump point and potable water.
This quaint town is a perfect base when exploring the region surrounding Launceston. From Scottsdale, you can take a drive to the beautiful Ringarooma Valley, up to Tasmania’s highest waterfall (hidden in Myrtle rainforest), then through lush green valleys to the historic tin mining village of Derby. This village boasts the Derby Tin Mine Centre Museum and Shanty Town and is home to the Derby River Derby late in October. Picturesque Northeast Park on the edge of town has resident platypus and other wildlife, gardens, and an enchanting mini-forest walk, where the freshwater burrowing crayfish (which are unique to this area) can often be seen. At the end of the day, this is the perfect place to stay with its campground, dump point, toilets, barbecues and other facilities. Just out of town is the Mt Stronach Reserve, where you can walk to the top of Mt Stronach for an unimpeded view all the way to the coast. A little further along, the three to four hour Cuckoo Falls walk is well worth the effort. Another interesting spot is Springfield Park. This tranquil spot has very interesting short walks taking in stands of huge Canadian redwood, Douglas fir and Radiata pine. Other attractions in the area include the Bridestowe Lavender Farm and ’Wildlife and Gourmet Game Food’ tours.
