Katanning is situated on the Great Western Highway, in the heart of the Great Southern region, 277 kilometres south-east of Perth. The development of the Great Western Railway in 1889 from Perth to Albany played an integral part in the development of Katanning. The same company who built the railway, Western Australia Land Company, also formed the town. It was later gazetted in 1898 after the state purchased the railway line and town.
Historical points of interest in the town include the Katanning Roller Flour Mill Museum, and the Kobeelya homestead. For the young at heart, stop in at the ‘All Ages Playground’, a rare and unusual playground with adult sized play equipment.
RV travellers passing through Katanning are able to park for up to 48 hours at the RV Overnight Rest Area. No charges apply for the stay. A dump point and potable water are also accessible at this site.
