Uralla is a quaint little town just 20km south-west of Armidale. The name Uralla originates from the dialect of the local Anaiwan people and means ‘meeting place’. Aptly named, Uralla is located 501 kilometres north of Sydney and 485 kilometres south of Brisbane at the meeting of Thunderbolt’s Way and the New England Highway. In 1852 a gold rush struck in the Rocky River; the prospect of gold attracted more than 5,000 people to the area and three years later the area of Uralla was given town status. The town would experience several more gold rushes as the years progressed, each leaving the town with lasting developments including churches, schools, hotels, and so forth.

For those travelling along the New England Highway, and are looking for a place to rest, short-term parking can be found at the Golf Club, this site has room for a few vehicles with a small fee for use of facilities. The Showground also has sites available with amenities, water and power.

A short stroll around town offers the opportunity to browse the antiquarian bookshop, antique stores and art galleries. Indulge your sweet tooth at the old-fashioned lolly shop, visit Thunderbolt’s grave, or just sit and enjoy a meal or glass of local wine at one of the many cafes or historical hotels. Visitors to the photogenic Virginia Creeper-clad Gostwyck Chapel on the scenic drive towards Dangars Gorge, could be forgiven for thinking that they had suddenly been transported to rural England. Just past this however, the unique octagonal Deeargee Station woolshed is a reminder that this is truly the Australian countryside. Uralla’s Heritage Walking Tour is the ideal way to view the well-preserved historic buildings and houses that lend an air of old-world charm.
