Deniliquin is situated on the Edward River, an anabranch of the Murray River. The town is 280 kilometres north of Melbourne and 737 kilometres south-west of Sydney. Established in 1842 as a suitable river crossing for livestock, the town has many natural and cultural attractions and special events. Local farms produce a wide range of summer and winter crops, sheep and cattle. Rice produced regionally is processed for export and domestic markets. The surrounding natural plains provide perfect conditions for Merino sheep, with many large sheep properties calling Deniliquin home. Historical buildings in the CBD feature on the Town Walk, with detailed historical displays located at the Peppin Heritage Centre and the Deniliquin Historical Society. Being located on the edge of the world’s largest red gum forest and within national and regional parks, there are many opportunities for bird watching, flora and fauna observation. The River allows visitors to enjoy swimming, skiing, fishing, kayaking or you can hire a houseboat. The Island Sanctuary in the town centre, is a preserved natural sanctuary for birds and animals, especially kangaroos.
The Waring Gardens adjacent to the main shopping centre provide visitors with a shaded area for walks and picnics. Barbeques, child friendly play areas and public toilet facilities are all located within the Gardens. The major event for the town is the annual Play on the Plains Festival and Ute Muster. This event, held on the NSW Labour Day long weekend, attracts thousands to the ‘ute capital of the world’ for two days of top-class entertainment. Deniliquin is an oasis of green on the edge of the expansive Old Man Plain. This flat plain provides visitors with opportunities to view vast clear skies, spectacular sunsets and dazzling stellar displays at night.
Known as ‘Deni’ to the locals, this friendly town is well worth a visit.
